History
NAOC’s 75 years existence
On the 23rd of March 2006 we celebrated our 75th anniversary.
Right after the Olympic Congress of 1930 steps were taken to form an Olympic Committee in the former Dutch colony Curacao. After 1954, when the Netherlands Antilles became autonomous the name was changed to “Nederlands Antilliaanse Bond voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding” (NABLO).
In 1938 NABLO became member of the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization (CACSO 1938), while in 1951 the Pan-American Sports Organization (PASO) was constituted.
Under the leadership of Mr. Guido Onesti the NOC’s met in Mexico, to discuss the formation of an association of NOC’s. The general assembly of NOC’s was instrumental of many changes in the relationship with IOC, but all for the best of the Olympic ideals and the NOC’s.
All these changes required more attention of the IOC on the construction and activities of the NOC’s. Our National Olympic Committee also had to make the necessary changes in order to comply with the Olympic Charter. In 1961 the General Assembly changed the Constitution of N.A.B.L.O. At the same time and to group those who had to resign, the “Verbond van Curacaose Sportorganisatie” was formed, and the “Stichting Exploitatie Sportterreinen” was constituted to administer the properties of N.A.O.C.
An important detail is that the island Aruba belonged to the Netherlands Antiles until the year 1985. In 1986 the IOC recognized the autonomous Olympic Committee of Aruba.
